Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine black students enrolled in Little Rock Central High school.
How they were Chosen
They were chosen by school district officials who made a system where black students who were interested in attending white schools were interviewed to determine who could actually attend the all white schools. Originally there were 17 students but of them only 9 decided to go to the school.
Off to School
The National Guard was sent into schools because Governor Orval Faubus wanted to prevent interracial schools from being common in society. He ordered the Arkansas National Guard to protect the nine black students.
The Nine
Guarding, Protecting
To protect the Little Rock Nine, 100 armed National Guard troops were called upon to not allow them to pass and controlled the mob with their clubs. To get the Little Rock Nine into school safely without the mob getting in at the same time was a hastle. The National Guard created a bloackade and when a person tried to get past they would get hit with a baton. (club)
Their Thoughts about The Little Rock Nine
Most members of the National Guard agreed with the governor of Arkansas, that desegregation wasn't necessary, which is why the National Guard was hesitant when ordered to escort the Little Rock Nine into school.
